Abstract
Authors carried out the survey of paragonimiasis by intradermal screening test with V.B.S. antigen, and the intermediate hosts of Paragonimus westermani in Namhai island (Namhai Kun, Kyungnam province, Korea). 380 of primary school children, 548 of high school students and 509 of all age groups in these areas were examined (total 1437; male 605, female 832). The following results were obtained in the survey.
1. -34.7% of the examines showed positive reaction, with sexual differences of 41.2% in male and 28.8% in female.
2. The highest positive rate was shown at Seo-Myun (60.4%) among the surveyed area and the primary school children (36.8%) among the students.
3. In age groups, the highest positive rate (70.5%) was experienced from 41 to 50 years of age group.
4. 722 of Cambaroides similis were caught from this area, and the metacercarial rate of Paragonimus westermani was 59.0%. The crayfish from the Masan stream (Pyung Ri, Namhai Myun) showed the highest incidence (94.6%). It is summarized that the Namhai island is one of the newly found high endemic area of paragonimiasis, and is related with the high rate of metacercarial incidence of the second intermediate host.
